Sam Dowd

Course Description
This is an introductory course in ceramics. Both hand building and wheel-throwing techniques in sculptural and functional pottery will be explored. Basic glaze application and kiln firing processes will be covered in this course. The development of ideas and concepts are encouraged through theory, critique, and historical reference.

Instructor
Sam Dowd was born in Omaha, NE. He got into art at an early age and was turned on to ceramics in seventh grade and has pursued that medium up to the present day. He earned a BFA from the University of Nebraska Kearney, and a MFA in ceramics from Kansas State University. Sam currently works for the Art Association of Jackson Hole where he coordinates and runs the ceramics, sculpture and Y.A.R.D. Art programs. Sam works primarily in clay, pouring handmade slip cast molds, altering the forms and making quirky robots and airships from them. He also welds and casts in metal.
