CREATIVE WRITING CAMP: SEEING LIKE A WRITER
A collaboration with the Jackson Hole Writers Conference and
the Art Association of Jackson Hole

Nicole Burdick

Course Description

Travel throughout the tapestry of Jackson, contemplate nature, observe the tourists…then translate your experiences into meaningful “stories and language,” with creative writer, Nicole Burdick. Find new ways to communicate using these perceptions. At the end of the week, students will have the opportunity to reveal their “tapestry of Jackson Hole” in broadcast format on KHOL, Jackson Hole Community Radio. Bring your journal and favorite pen, a sack lunch, water bottle, sunscreen and sunglasses!

Instructor
Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti…. Go. Go. Go. With a pen in hand, the world just gets more curious, says Nicole Burdick. With a degree in English and a few other far-flung experiences in her pack, Nicole sees where writing and exploration merge and plans to keep it that way.

So you’re heading to the river and back?
Find one fantasy and scribble down one fact.

Interview that tourist and give him a new name.
Gather weird data for the writing game.

Unleash your pen in the middle of the square
With eyes wide open, there’s a story brewing there.

Nicole takes two favorite pastimes – travel and writing – and whisks them together for her poetry and story concoctions. Sometimes we have to skip instead of walk – go big, shake it up and crack open our poet, our investigator, our broadcaster, and our coolest ideas. This week’s mission is to cruise around the townscape, note the things that make us go WOW, make our brains explode a little, and stir up a few bits of fantasy along the way. With enough daring, our notebooks will rise to life.
