SPANISH CULTURE AROUND THE WORLD
A Collaboration with Teton Literacy Program and the Art Association of Jackson Hole |
|
| Course Description |
Teton Literacy staff will join the Art Association staff for a fun-filled week of music, dance, story-time and art explorations in Spanish and English! Each day 15 new Spanish vocabulary words will be emphasized and integrated throughout the day! Come travel with us and immerse yourself in the art and culture of Spain, Mexico and South America!
MONDAY – SHAKE YOUR MARACAS Make and shake your very own colorful maracas today with song! Learn traditional songs in Spanish with a guest artist musician to share with your friends and family.
TUESDAY – WARRIOR MASKS Warriors believed that when they wore a certain animal’s mask, they would have the physical qualities of those animals. Masks have been used in Mexico since the pre-Hispanic age, mostly carved of wood to go over the face. Create, paint and decorate your own mask from a variety of animal molds then move in rhythm like that animal!
WEDNESDAY – SOMBRERO, SOMBRERO Make your own costume and props for a day of dance and celebration! Join guest artists in strutting your stuff in
Spanish song with a wide-brimmed sombrero to take along!
THURSDAY – OJO DE DIOS The Ojo de Dios or God’s Eye is an ancient symbol made by the Huichol of Mexico. The central eye was made when a child was born. Each year, a bit of yarn was added until the child turned five at which point the Ojo is complete. Make these ancient symbols with a twist, as well as other colorful yarn and mixed media projects today!
FRIDAY – FIESTA! Let’s have an art party today, where we make our own decorations and games! Gather together to make the traditional pin-the-tail-on-the-burro, brilliant tissue flowers and a big piñata, then we will take turns pinning the “burro’s” tail and bashing
that piñata!
