Michael Mentler

Course Description
This workshop is about more than drawing what you see, it is about knowing what to look for. The focus will be on the rhythms, and relationships that put the life in life drawing. Michael will show you how to find the angles, and alignments that define proportions. He will help you investigate the titling, twisting and bending of volumes that manifest movement. It all begins with drawing the figure from life and learning to understand what the figure is doing. We will study the model from all angles and sense the universal truths of the action or inaction involved. There will be a combination of demonstrations and lectures progressing through; balance, rhythm, alignment, volumes, interlocking, the tilts, twists and turns, and how to unify values to maximize the illusion of form. We will end with a drawing procedure that will go beyond the obvious and awaken your senses to the beauty the lies beneath the surface. Individual instruction and guidance will be given daily.
Michael Mentler received his formal education at The American Academy of Art in Chicago, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, and Washington University in Saint Louis, B.F.A., M.F.A., M.A., (Art History). Michael taught at Washington University for several years early in his career and has taught hundreds of students at the Society of Figurative Arts in Dallas of which he is the Founder and Director.
